Part 3: Testing the Sports Warehouse website

Student note: this part of the assessment requires you to build on the Sports Warehouse website you developed as part of your work in Web Cluster 3. If you have not built the Sports Warehouse website yet as part of the course, your assessor may give you a pre-built alternate website to review and test. You will be required to review this website and perform quality assurance procedures over it. Refer to the following tasks for further details.

Task 1: Prepare to test your website

  • Before you commence testing your static website for Sports Warehouse complete a Quality Assurance plan.
  • Review the Sports Warehouse Website QA Checklist included as part of the case study scenario and enter “N/A” against any items you believe are not relevant to the project justifying your response in the same space.
  • Determine whether you will use a centralised, distributed or combined quality assurance methodology and justify your response
  • Based on your understanding of the case study scenario, what guidelines would you implement for the updating and loading of content to your website.
  • Summarise the specifications which you used to originally develop your website in Web Cluster 3.

Task 2: Testing the static website

Student note: In this task you will test and identify errors which may exist within your website. It is important to document these errors when completing this task, as in Part 4 of this assessment you will be asked to fix these errors and retest your website comparing the differences in your test results.

  • In-line with Sports Warehouse QA requirements, you must test the basic functionality of your website and document your results using the provided Website test documentation template.

In your response, you will need to outline the following tests performed and the initial tests results. The following testing must be completed and documented:

  1. HTML/CSS validation

Use the W3C validation tools to validate your HTML & CSS to ensure that your markup and styling code is clean and correct. This will also help with cross-browser accessibility.

  • Document your results from both the HTML & CSS validation tools.
  1. Cross-browser testing

Test your web page in 3 or more browsers including at least 1 mobile browser on a portrait phone (you can use a variety of browsers and operating system combinations) and document the differences in how your web page is displayed and operates across them.

  • Capture screenshots of your web page in the different browsers
  • Construct a summary of how they appear differently across browsers
  1. Accessibility testing

Document your web page’s results from a Web Accessibility Evaluation tool. (Long URL: https://wave.webaim.org/).

  • Document your WAVE validation tool results.
  • Document any errors and how you fixed them (you don’t need to worry about the warnings if they are too specific/obscure).
  • Construct a paragraph outlining some other (hypothetical) potential accessibility issues you could face with your website and how you could address those issues.
  1. Quantification of errors
  • List all errors observed in your initial tests and compare to the number of errors observed in your final tests.
  • Use Google Lighthouse to test the speed, performance and search engine optimisation of your website.
  • Using Google Lighthouse as a basis, create a list of benchmarks your website should meet and describe how reviews could be conducted to ensure continuous improvement of your website.
    • Once you have completed the testing, draft an email to the Sports Warehouse Technology and Operations Manager, Sally Cortez using the Gelos Enterprises Email template.

Submit the website testing documentation (including completed email template) to your assessor.

NOTE: The documentation must be submitted as a PDF; no other formats will be accepted.

Submit the project for review:

  • website documentation (PDF)

Part 4: Rectify errors and retest your website

Student note: this part of the assessment requires you to retest on the Sports Warehouse website. You will be required to review this website and perform quality assurance procedures over it. Refer to the following tasks for further details.

Task 1: Rectifying errors in development

  • Rectify the errors you noted in Part 3: Task 2.1 and repeat all testing procedures documenting your results.
  • Compare your final test results to those obtained in Part 3: Task 2.1, noting how you rectified the errors identified.

Submit the website testing documentation (including completed email template) to your assessor.

NOTE: The documentation must be submitted as a PDF; no other formats will be accepted.

Submit the project for review:

  • website documentation (PDF)

Part 5: Research and evaluate emerging web technology trends

To complete this part of the assessment, you will be required to enhance the Sports Warehouse website using emerging web technology trends.

Throughout the different stages of the website development, you will have to follow quality assurance processes as outlined in the task instructions. Any feedback requested by the client must be recorded in a change request form. You must keep record of the history of the project development in a change log.

Task 1: Research emerging web technologies

Sally Cortez (Operations Manager) and Patrick Brown (Customer Service Officer) of Sports Warehouse have asked you to research, evaluate and implement some emerging web technologies that may improve the Sports Warehouse website. They have provided details for 3 additional website features and would like you to investigate technology solutions for each one.

Part 6: Implement emerging web technologies

Task 1:  Implement the emerging technology solutions

  • Create a working demonstration for 2 of the features evaluated in Part 5. You should implement a working proof of concept that shows the Sports Warehouse staff how the emerging web technology could be used in the live website.

Task 2:  Test the solutions

    • Perform cross browser testing on your web application to test the web app in different browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome using Browserling (Long URL: https://www.browserling.com).
    • For each solution, describe any differences between how each browser handles the web technology you are demonstrating in the space provided.
  • For each cross-browser testing issue discovered, describe how you can rectify them.
