Research proposal: Option 2

Completion requirements

Choose an environmental issue that is of particular interest to you and write a hypothetical research proposal (as if you were seeking funding for researching the problem/issue). Your research proposal should critically apply methodological and theoretical approaches covered in lectures, tutorials and subject readings in addition to other scholarly sources. You may also wish to highlight the applicability of your chosen methodological, theoretical approach as identified by its advocates.

The research proposal must include the following:

  • Summary of the project: 100 word max.
  • Background; including both the environmental problem/issue examined and a summary of a sample of the available literature, including ethnographic case studies, that will inform your research project.  (What is the problem? What research has been done on this issue to date?): 500 words max.
  • Aims of the research (What do you hope to achieve?): 500 words max.
  • Brief outline of the theoretical / methodological approach you will use. Which of the approaches we have examined in this subject will you adopt in your research project and why?  (How will you do it?): 400 words max.
  • Significance of the research (Why is it important for an environmental anthropologist to do this research? How might your research contribute to ameliorating the problem?): 500 words max.
  • List of references.

You must employ at lest one of the sub-fields in environmental anthropology in your research proposal. You will also need draw on at least two ethnographic case studies in which to situate your own research proposal and/or to argue for a gap in the knowledgethat then justifies your proposed research.

You do not have to provide a budget; however, your proposal should be realistic in scope, aims and in size (in other words don’t make wild claims, such as that you will solve global climate change single-handed). Your proposal should be written in essay style using the sub-headings provided (a-f above) i.e. no dot points.

  • In the Assessment 3: resources folder you can see an example of a good (80%) research proposal and the assessment criteria for the major essay.
